By coincidence, they met together in a familiar yet isolated space. Through this serendipity, their attitudes varied between suspicion, understanding, and appreciation. There appeared to be a vague friendship during this short journey.

I got into film and video production by coincidence.
I then enrolled in the Film Diploma program at The Chinese University of Hong Kong. After graduating, I continued creating various media works, including videos, short films, and illustration design. I’ve been in the video production industry for nearly 20 years.

A restless person. They attempt to join the circle of conversation multiple times. The background of the creation is that the author themselves has faced problems in trying to communicate. They only observe while others are talking. They try to take a step forward but find themselves shut out. There is a feeling of frustration in wanting to convey their thoughts but being unable to reach others.

After working as an assistant director on films and documentary programs, I shifted my focus to screenwriting.

A man with hair growing wildly over his body is taken by a mania of ecstasy and anguish. He struggles with the hair becoming a means of discipline and punishment against himself, while being overwhelmed by the explosive jubilance of its sprouting. In this bizarre vision, overlaid 16mm and Super 8 film loop projections created with the filmmakers’ own hair, clash in existential rage against discipline and the body in Singapore.

Mark CHUA and LAM Li Shuen are a filmmaker and artist duo from Singapore. They met through forming an art rock group and started out making lo-fi underground films as self taught filmmakers. Over the years of their partnership, they have carved out a cinema of speculative fiction and body horror, exploring existential anxiety, histories and alienation.
Their films have screened at international film festivals including the International Film Festival Rotterdam (2024, 2023), New Directors/New Films (2023) and BFI London Film Festival (2021). In 2021, with their short film A Man Trembles, they were awarded Best Southeast Asian Director at the Singapore International Film Festival. They are currently developing their feature project, Strange Root, which was presented at CineMart 2025 and Berlinale Talents Script Station 2024.

A composer recounts a dream from his youth that inspired the slow movement of his first string quartet, Prayer of the Sea. The dream, depicting a peaceful dissolution into the sea and wind, symbolized his future death. Decades later, rediscovering a drawing from the quartet’s premiere – perfectly capturing the dream’s essence – revived its emotions. Now older, he reflects on the dream’s message: a serene acceptance of life’s inevitable end.
An audiovisual elegy offering a calm perspective on the universal experience of passing.
